decisions without marketing

It seems fitting that the inaugural post on a blog about marketing should address the question of what marketing is.

First, what is business?  Business is the act of creating something of value, either a tangible good or a service, and selling it to willing buyers.  Hence the saying, “nothing good ever happens until there’s a sale.”  Simple enough.

How about advertising?  Advertising is the act of attracting attention to the valuable good or service that one has created.  Or, more simply, advertising is selling in print.  However, it is difficult (if not impossible) to advertise effectively to the general public.

So then what is marketing?  I think of marketing as a refinement on advertising.  Marketing is selling in print (or audio, video, etc) but to a specific group, namely the market for the created valuable good or service.  With marketing, we aim to target specifically those potential clients most likely to value and benefit from our product.

This blog is intended to provide assistance in all these subjects:  business, advertising, and marketing.  These three topics are intrinsically connected, and only by harnessing their combined power can an honest business man hope to compete.
