Four Sources for Free Back Links

As I’ve recently written about, you need back links pointing to your pages both for the search engines to find you and to get them to rank you higher than your competition.

Here are four sources of potential back links that you can use right now:

  1. state/local gov sites
  2. local business associations
  3. education website
  4. web directories

The main benefit of getting back links from .gov sites is that government websites carry far more authority than any typical web page.  Another benefit is that getting these listings is almost always free, requiring nothing from you but time.

Local business associations are another great source of back links.  These are usually non-profits, using the .org domains.  Again, you get a boost in link juice from these sites.  Try asking for a listing.  Often it doesn’t cost you anything.

As in the previous two cases, getting a back link from a .edu domain is going to pack more link juice than regular websites.  These are basically just more .gov domains these days anyway.  The search engines love them.  So if you’ve done any favors for your local school organization, volunteered to help the volleyball team, or sponsored the marching band, ask for a back link.  It’s the least they could do.

And finally, there are the web directories.  Most have either a paid or free option.  Yahoo directory is an example of one that is paid only, but obviously, since it’s Yahoo, it’s going to be pretty powerful.  However, there are plenty web directories where anyone can submit there site for free.  There is often a waiting limit after your initial submission, but don’t let that stop you.  If you need some help finding more directories, try this link.
